During the 2008-09 academic year, the Young Harris College Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Identification Team administered a comprehensive process to select an appropriate QEP. This process included (1) educating the College constituencies about the QEP process; (2) soliciting input from those constituencies, which included faculty, students, staff, administration, alumni and members of the governing board; (3) reviewing internal and external research regarding the need for improvement in student learning; (4) reviewing proposed topics to select the one which best addressed the needs of Young Harris College students. As a result of this process, the Identification Team recommended that the College develop a program to improve students’ written and spoken communication. This recommendation was endorsed by the College’s Leadership Team for Reaffirmation, by the President’s Leadership Council and by the Board of Trustees.
During the 2009-10 academic year, the process was taken up by the Young Harris College QEP Development Team, which designed a narrowly focused program within the academic curriculum to improve students’ writing and speaking. This program was informed by faculty recommendations and a study of best practices in writing and speaking instruction. The proposed program was thoroughly reviewed by the faculty, staff and administration prior to approval and was endorsed by the Board of Trustees.
